What about a PeopleSoft App Store?

I've been mulling the idea of having an app store for PeopleSoft applications, similar to the Apple app store. Wouldn't it be great to have an online store where developers can upload bolt-on pieces and applications that have been created which customers can download and install in their PeopleSoft systems? I know that this is completely different from a typical ERP solution delivery, but I envision that such a concept will greatly help in enhancing PeopleSoft's popularity among customers. Fundamentally, this will also breed a group of developers or companies which would be pure app/product developers and I am sure that PeopleSoft customers will get to have some high quality add-ons which will enhance the usability experience. I am sure that this will happen some time, some day!

Hi Sowmya,
Why not. With proper coding standards and documentation, it should be lapped up by customers. I am sure that this will unleash the creativity of PS developers and that will in turn lead to customers having excellent bolt-on products to choose from. In short, a win-win scenario for all parties involved! Already we have the likes of Grey-Sparling who have a range of products (refer http://code.greysparling.com), so it's just an extension of an already existing concept.

It Sure does sound interesting and appealing. Nice thought!

But from the Clients perspective, how would one be convinced, to pick a code and shovel it in their system?

This would again require some analysis from their own End.

And, how about the maintenance/on going support ?

IT Sector in general loves to have a throttle on someones neck, considering the risk factor.

May be we need an open-source kinda system where we come up with a a standard common customizations, then make the code accessible editable by the deb community....Just a thought!

Hello Vishal,
Thank you for your thoughts. There are surely challenges in adopting this idea as the ERP delivery models stand right now. But I am sure that this is an idea that is powerful enough to take root even in the current environment.
Checkout the app store of salesforce.com (I agree that salesforce.com is on a completely different architecture that PS) - http://appexchange.salesforce.com/home
So, this is something which has already been tried out and established to be successful. I am sure that it's only a matter of time that some company/individual would seize this opportunity for other ERP products like PS, Oracle or SAP.
